Advanced Techniques for Lymphedema Management Course:

Course Description:  This two-day advanced seminar provides the information and techniques needed to problem solve through a complex variety of diagnoses relating to the lymphatic system. Complex diagnoses include patients with co-morbidities such as obesity, diabetes, auto-immune diseases, CHF, chronic inflammation, venous-lymphatic, phlebo-lymphatic, lipo-lymphatic insufficiencies, etc.; patients with differential diagnoses such as post thrombotic syndrome, venous insufficiency, patients with variable diagnoses related to the lymphatic system such as lipedema and primary lymphedema; and patients with complications related to advanced lymphedema such as fistulae, papillomas, and cysts. The course is also designed to expand the clinicians knowledge, insight, and management skills in the treatment of patients with acute/chronic trauma to their lymphatic systems.  Gaining a working knowledge of  Stage 0 Latency Stage Lymphedema and patient education/prevention, axillary web syndrome, and Mondors syndrome. The hands-on techniques presented in the lab sessions will include a series of specialized, unique, integrated techniques which will address the musculo-skeletal system, the nervous system, the vascular system, and their integration with the lymphatic system. Upon completion of the course, clinicians will be able to use the integrated techniques specific to this seminar to address the advanced treatment needs of patients with UE complications, LE complications, head and neck complications, groin and genital complications, and abdominal and trunk complications in existing lymphedema conditions. Therapists with prior lymphedema experience will benefit from the application of these advanced clinical treatment techniques that will add expertise to their treatment protocols, optimize the functioning of the lymphatic system, resulting in a more sustainable patient outcome.  This will include more cost effective compression bandaging and garment options for their patients.  The information presented in the course will enhance a clinician's ability to develop a continuum of patient care, leading to a multi-disciplined approach, and a more effective means of  marketing  new concepts in lymphedema management to the medical community.  We will also discuss problem solving options and further ways to develop and expand your current lymphedema management program. 

 Alternative treatment techniques including current holistic trends, pharmaceutical options and therapeutic taping for lymphedema will be explored and discussed. This course presents evidence-based practices in the management of lymphedema, as well as providing dynamic laboratory time. This will assist in advancing the clinicians ability to integrate these new techniques and fully understand all contributing co-morbidities and associated complications. The concepts obtained and practiced in this course can be immediately applied in clinical situations providing consistent functional outcomes.
